Craig Mustard, the newly appointed Lead Mens coach, give some tips on what paddlers can do if they are unable to get in their usual kayak training.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We are hearing from lots of paddlers and coaches lately that they have been unable to paddle regularly due to flooded rivers, water quality issues or the endless bad weather. This can be very frustrating as important events or selection trials loom but just because we are out of kayaks, it does not mean that valuable training cannot happen.<\/p>\n<p>There are three big pillars you need\u00a0 in order to be the fastest kayaker that you can be:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>Fit<\/li>\n<li>Strong<\/li>\n<li>Technically Sound<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you can\u2019t paddle, you can still improve your fitness by running, cycling or even jumping on a rowing machine. If you are not used to these activities, I recommend being reserved\u00a0on the time and\u00a0intensity when starting as you don&#8217;t want to pick up any niggles by starting too hard. A 30minute running or cycling session is still far better than having no session at all.<br \/>\nIt will also allow you to keep the routine of training which is equally as important.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4957 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kalani-weights-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kalani-weights-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kalani-weights-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kalani-weights-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kalani-weights-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kalani-weights-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another way you can make the most of your time out of the boat is to work on your strength and\u00a0mobility. Good\u00a0mobility and improving your\u00a0strength will\u00a0benefit your technique and both will\u00a0influence your speed of your paddling. Mobility and\u00a0strength work will pay off big time when you return to kayaking but be\u00a0careful not to overdo the workouts. I highly recommend getting in contact with a personal trainer or a\u00a0professional in this field before starting your\u00a0workout routine.<\/p>\n<p>If you have access to a kayaking ergo you can also use this time to work on your fitness and at the same time also work on paddling\u00a0technique. Ergo&#8217;s are\u00a0fantastic for training when you can&#8217;t get on the water and also really\u00a0useful for\u00a0technical work if you know how to paddle on them.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4344 size-full\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Clean-sport-101-e1675922738869.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Clean-sport-101-e1675922738869.png 623w, https:\/\/www.uptest.co.nz\/canoeracing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Clean-sport-101-e1675922738869-300x147.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having a mirror set up when using a kayaking ergo so you can work on your\u00a0technique at the same time is extremely useful. I also suggest using the lowest\u00a0resistance if you are not used to using an ergo. If it is your first time on an ergo, ask a coach or training partner to help give\u00a0feedback on how you are going. If you don&#8217;t know how to use them\u00a0correctly, they can be\u00a0counterproductive and have the\u00a0potential to cause\u00a0injuries or\u00a0reinforce bad technique.<\/p>\n<p>A final bit of work that you can do whilst off the water to help improve your training and kayaking is understand or remind yourself of the key principles of kayaking technique.<\/p>\n<p>Head to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paddler.nz\/paddling-technique\">Paddler.nz website<\/a> and read through the Principles of Technique manual. This has been developed by the some of the best coaches and minds in international kayaking to help paddlers and coaches in NZ. There are also some suggestions for drills and activities.
