The <\/span>kiwi<\/span> k<\/span>ayaking community watched in hope as the N<\/span>ew <\/span>Z<\/span>ealand<\/span> Men<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s<\/span> K4 took to the water <\/span>at the World Championships in August as they <\/span>sought<\/span> to qualify a <\/span>men<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s<\/span> K4 for the Olympics for the first time since<\/span> 1992. <\/span>Unfortunately,<\/span> i<\/span>t <\/span>wasn\u2019t<\/span> to be<\/span>, with <\/span>an unlucky <\/span>draw meaning the men <\/span>m<\/span>issed out on<\/span> making<\/span> th<\/span>e<\/span> A final<\/span> <\/span>despite having the seventh fastest semi-final time.<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/strong>Now that the dust has settled following the World Championships, we caught up with Canoe Racing NZ <\/span>Lead Men\u2019s<\/span> Coach, Craig Mustard, to talk about the men\u2019s squad and switching the focus from the K4 to the K2 as they continue their journey in the Paddle to Paris.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

While the result <\/span>in Duisb<\/span>u<\/span>rg<\/span> ended the <\/span>men\u2019s <\/span>K<\/span>4 Olympic <\/span>dream<\/span> for now<\/span>, it was not the end of the Paris<\/span> 2024<\/span> Olympic campaign<\/span> for the<\/span> NZ<\/span> men\u2019s <\/span>canoe sprint team<\/span>, with the opportunity t<\/span>o qualify a<\/span> K2 <\/span>at the Oceania Championships <\/span>in the new year<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>he team <\/span>has been<\/span> quick to refocus <\/span>and reset their goals<\/span> upon their return to New Zealand<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite paddling the 7th fastest time overall in the semi finals, the K4 mens crew unfortunately did not advance through to the A final, missing out on the only chance at Olympic qualification.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cYes, it\u2019s disappointing that we didn\u2019t qualify,\u201d says Mustard. \u201cBut we are extremely proud of the work the guys put in and because we came so close, now the belief is even higher that when we show up at the Olympic games, we are going to get even better results than last time,\u201d he says, referring to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where the men\u2019s K2 <\/span>crew<\/span> of Max Brown and Kurtis Imrie finished fifth<\/span> in an electric<\/span> race<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mustard, who took over as the men\u2019s lead coach in February, says that the message he reiterates to the team is that the \u201cgoal hasn\u2019t been denied, it\u2019s just been delayed\u201d, saying that it\u2019s so relevant as the team shifts their focus to securing men\u2019s K2 quota spots in February. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tikitapu Sprint event held early December was a good opportunity to \u201copen the\u00a0pool up\u201d says Mustard. \u201cThat was seeing what athletes are out there in New Zealand that we believe have the potential to go all the way,\u201d he explains. The next steps will involve funneling down the eight athletes spread between four K2 boats. Up to three K2\u2019s will head across to Australia for the Oceania Championships in February where the team aims to qualify a boat for Paris.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With only one qualification spot up for grabs at this event, a NZ men\u2019s K2 needs to be the first placed unqualified Oceania crew in the qualification race, placing higher than the likes of Samoa and the Cook Islands, to secure their Olympic berth. Australia have already achieved their K2 qualification through their fourth place result at the World Championships.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assuming they are successful, the final step in the process is the crew trials and selecting the two athletes who will race in the K2. \u201cSo obviously we plan like we are going to the Olympic Games, but there are a few steps to go through yet.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The boat comes first\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mustard concedes that one of the challenges is that the Cambridge-based squad is a group of men who are not only a team, but friends off the water, and they\u2019re battling it out for two spots. \u201cIt\u2019s a hard one. But we talk about it, and it\u2019s about the boat coming first. It\u2019s such a massive goal that we\u2019re going after, and we need everyone\u2019s support.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The team has put in a lot of work off the water over the last few years alongside team psychologist Dom Vettise to manage these tricky dynamics and build and maintain the team culture and behaviors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He is quick to point out that everyone plays a valuable role in the process. \u201cWe know we have eight people, and only two of those will be going to the Olympic Games. But those other six people are so crucial in keeping our training environment positive and productive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Depth in the squad<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on the progress since the Tokyo Olympics, Mustard says the depth within the men\u2019s squad has really grown over the last four years. \u201cIt\u2019s in a really healthy space \u2013 we\u2019ve got these 23 and under athletes who are filtering into the <\/span>h<\/span>igh <\/span>p<\/span>erformance space at a very competitive level.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He says it is a real testament to the work those athletes have put in, along with their coaches and clubs. \u201cIt\u2019s also a big thank you to the current generation of men for stepping up and creating the belief, and also being so open to sharing their knowledge and experience to the next generation.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Several of the men in the current squad have been in the pathway program right from club level as teenagers, and Mustard feels that the program has done a fantastic job of nurturing and developing those athletes into the paddlers they are today. \u201cThe standard is high, and the depth is really big, so the next Olympic cycle should be good.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He stresses that while the next generation of athletes are at a \u201cgood level\u201d, now is not the time to relax. \u201cFrom a high-performance perspective, we continue to look at how we can support them to get better and take them further.\u201d He says the coaching team is working to blend the younger paddlers with those who are more experienced. \u201cBy doing that, hopefully we continue to improve our performances and keep our fantastic team atmosphere and culture going.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the Olympic qualifiers less than two months away, the squad will have just a short break over Christmas to head home and spend time with their families before getting back into it in the New Year and completing the final block of training before heading across the ditch. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
